I Guardiani [Ee Gward-e-ahn-e] means “The Guardians” in Italian. The Cypress trees are not actually native to Tuscany. They were brought to Tuscany a long time ago, and have several alleged reasons for being planted in this region of Italy. Some say that they were aesthetically pleasing, and were used to line the roads to make the landscape even more beautiful than it already was. Other say that the trees were used to separate one farm from another, and helped divide the landscape, without the use of fences. And the final thought is that they were used strategically to block the wind and protect the farm land. Adam DeSerio’s thought is its probably a little of all three. These trees stand strong, and are guardians of the land, preserving tradition and history in the same way the marble statues do in the cities and museums. During his Sophomore year at University (January – June of 2014) Adam DeSerio decided to study abroad in Italy in order to discover the beautiful landscape of Tuscany and his Italian roots. He studied Art History, Creative Writing and the Italian Language. During his 3 day weekends in Italy, he traveled as often as he could, and set out on a 5 month quest to capture the true essence of Italy, not only in his mind but also with his camera. Italy is not just a place… it’s a way of life.
