Electrical storms are quite common in Arizona during the summer months of July and August. This storm was flashing bolts directly behind Cathedral Rock all night long. After repeated flashes that woke Lou DeSerio from a deep sleep, as his bedroom window faced Cathedral Rock, he knew he had to go to Red Rock Crossing and attempt to capture the most exciting lightning storm of his lifetime. In the dark with only a flashlight to aid in his walking, he arrived at a most familiar location thinking he was somewhat protected and could set up his 4″x5″ view camera and wait while the lightning bolts filled the sky. Since it was totally dark, he was able to leave the shutter of the lens open so that when the strike hit it was captured on his film. Then he waited and watched for the perfect arrangement of light and shadow. This is the best capture of that evening of waiting, watching and exposing image after image until he was satisfied with all the elements. A rare moment had been preserved and captured best by the art of photography.
