Lou DeSerio was over 20 miles away, in Jerome, when he saw an awesome storm forming over Sedona, Arizona. During this fall, DeSerio had only been photographing Sedona for three years, yet he still knew that Cathedral Rock, from Red Rock Crossing, was the perfect location to set up. Frantically driving to this preconceived location as fast as the turns of 89A would allow, DeSerio barely got there in time to set up for one photograph. He set up his Linhof 4×5″ camera moment he arrived at the scene he had envisioned, before the storm moved any further in, quickly forced the right settings, focused the lens and shot. Moments later the sun went blind, and the foreground went completely dark.
As DeSerio waiting in the darkroom, hoping that the one piece of film from that day would develop properly, he recalled that the fall foliage had never been that perfect before. At that instance, he knew he was part of a truly great moment. Fortunately the developing of the film was a success. This photography went on to win several awards, be featured in magazines, collected by several art collectors around the world, and is without a doubt Lou DeSerio’s most popular and beloved signature piece which hundreds of annual visitors see that come to Sedona.
